What is a prosthesis?
A prosthesis is a replacement of a missing limb by means of an artificial substitute.
Who fits a prosthesis?
A prosthetist is a trained healthcare practitioner who evaluates, fabricates, fit and adjusts prosthetic devices. All of CFM practitioners are state licensed and certified as mandated by Texas law.
Amputation Levels: Lower & Upper
LOWER
- Toe Filler- replaces a missing toe or toes
- Chopart Prosthesis- replaces a missing forefoot
- Symes Prosthesis- replaces a missing foot below the ankle
- Transtibial Prosthesis- replaces a missing leg below the knee
- Knee Disarticulation Prosthesis- replaces a missing leg at the knee
- Transfermoral Prosthesis-replaces a missing leg above the knee
- Hip Disarticulation Prosthesis- replaces a missing leg and hip joint
UPPER
- Transradial Prosthesis- replaces a missing arm below the elbow joint
- Elbow Disarticulation Prosthesis- replaces a missing arm at the elbow joint
- Transhumeral Prosthesis- replaces a missing arm above the elbow joint
- Shoulder Disarticulation Prosthesis- replaces a missing arm above the shoulder joint
- Partial Hand/Finger Prosthesis- replaces a finger, fingers, hand or part of a hand
Construction of a Prosthesis: Endoskeletal or Exoskeletal
Exoskeletal prosthesis- It is made with a hard outer shell protecting the internal components of the prosthesis. It is indicated for a heavy-duty user such as a farmer, construction worker or mechanic.
Endoskeletal prosthesis- It is made with a soft outer surface. This is indicated for cosmetic reasons, light activities and is easily adjusted.
