What should I look for in a prosthetic company?
- Look for company that has a certified/licensed practitioner on staff. In addition, the facility should be accredited.
Q: Why does the first prosthesis not have a cover so it looks like a leg?
- Medicare will pay for 2 legs in the first year as long as one is a prep-leg. The patient is first fitted with a prep-leg for training. In six to eight months, after the amputated leg shrinks, the patient is fitted for the second leg, the definitive prosthesis. This prosthesis is fabricated to match the patient's natural leg.
Q. Will my insurance pay for my prosthesis or orthosis?
- Many insurance companies will cover your prosthetic and/or orthotic devices. However, each plan varies. You may call the custom services number on the back of your insurance card for complete coverage details. Additionally, Centers For Mobility will verify your benefits and file your claim.
Q. What if I don't have insurance?
- Centers For Mobility works with several organizations that may help provide you with prosthesis at our facility. Please call 713-773-0969 for details.
Q. When should I contact a prosthetist?
- Centers For Mobility recommends contacting a prosthetist as soon as possible. Meeting with your prosthetist prior to your amputation may help relieve any anxiety. For optimum care, your practitioner and facility you choose should be certified and accredited by ABC or BOC and must be licensed through the state of Texas.
Q. Do I need a prescription for your services?
Q. How long will it take to get my prosthesis?
- Delivery time will vary based on your healing process. Generally, it will take several weeks to receive prosthesis once your residual limb is ready. The first visit will consist of an evaluation and questions. If your limb is ready, your practitioner may take a cast of your limb and measurements. Once we have received a cast, your prosthesis will be fabricated. You will be required to make several more visits for adjustments for the best fit.
Q. How often should I see my prosthetist?
- You will generally see your prosthetist twice a year. Call for an appointment if you are experience and issues with your prosthesis such as a loose, tight or uncomfortable fit, irritation, blisters, pain, noises, cracks, loose parts, weight gain or weight loss.
